Tropism: International Artist-in-Residence Program

New artist-in-residence program at Rejmyre Art Lab exploring growth, vegetation, and ecological transformation through art.

Rejmyre Art Lab's Center for Peripheral Studies invites professional artists to participate in Tropism, a new artist-in-residence program exploring how organisms respond to their surroundings and how artistic processes can embody principles of growth and reorientation. The program examines the potential of art to create ecologies between people, across generations, and between culture and nature.

Six artists will be selected over two years to work in The Refuging Pavilion, a transparent dome greenhouse workspace located in the industrial village of Rejmyre. The program is curated by Jonatan Habib Engqvist and conducted in collaboration with Bergården nursing home and Rejmyre school, emphasizing participatory and relational practices.

The residency structure includes: (1) an ensemble week where all six artists engage in collective exercises and site visits; (2) a nine-week individual residency developing projects in collaboration with local partners (elementary school or nursing home); and (3) a group exhibition in spring/summer 2028.

Artists working with growth, vegetation, cultivation, care, and ecologies—including both ecological and social dimensions—are encouraged to apply. Plant life can serve as both concrete material and metaphor for societal transformation.

Compensation includes 50,000 SEK work grant plus up to 50,000 SEK production budget, accommodation, travel reimbursement (up to 10,000 SEK), and 7,000 SEK exhibition fee. Artists must participate in the ensemble week (April 6-12, 2026) and individual residency periods (April 2026-August 2027). Maximum 5 consecutive days away and 14 days total absence during residency required.
