University of Birmingham & Royal Ballet Partnership

Strategic partnership offering research, education, talent development and career pathways in dance and creative industries.

The University of Birmingham and Birmingham Royal Ballet have announced a strategic partnership formalizing over two decades of collaboration. This partnership brings together academic expertise and artistic excellence to expand joint work across research, education, talent development, and public engagement.

Key opportunities include:

1. Research Collaboration: The partnership applies sports science and health research to ballet, working with Birmingham Royal Ballet's Jerwood Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Dance Injuries. University academics are exploring dancer wellbeing, including research into safeguarding, bone health, nutrition, and mental resilience.

2. Education & Talent Development: Building on previous postgraduate programmes that saw 22 University of Birmingham alumni work with the ballet, the partnership offers student placements, joint research projects, and new career pathways for creative and cultural professionals.

3. Academic Modules: Birmingham Business School has introduced "Understanding Consumer Behaviour Through Dance," a postgraduate marketing module based on learning through body and mind, supporting cultural economy growth.

4. Public Engagement: The partnership supports public health initiatives, strengthens creative industries, and increases cultural impact locally, nationally, and globally.

5. Professional Development: Opportunities for next-generation creative professionals through mentorship, academic advisory work on productions, and research into audience engagement and performance psychology.

The collaboration demonstrates commitment to Birmingham's cultural, social, and economic development while maintaining global ambition in the arts and education sectors.
