Urban Trail Public Art Installation - Station 7
Asheville's Urban Trail seeks artists for public art installations. Station 7 features 'Fluvial' by Rachel David, inspired by Art Deco architecture.
The City of Asheville is seeking artists to create public artwork for the Urban Trail, a downtown walking tour featuring 30 sculptures tied to Asheville history. The Urban Trail is an established public art program that highlights the city's cultural heritage and architectural significance.
Station 7 of the Urban Trail, recently filled by Rachel David's 'Fluvial,' serves as a model for this opportunity. 'Fluvial' is simultaneously an art installation and public seating, designed to complement the historic S&W Building at 56 Patton Ave. The piece was inspired by Art Deco architecture and Douglas Ellington's iconic S&W Building design.
The selection process involves submitting proposals in response to a public call for artists. Selected artists work with the City of Asheville and a panel of community stakeholders and Public Art and Culture Commission members to develop and install their work.
This is an excellent opportunity for artists to create permanent public installations in a vibrant downtown setting, contribute to Asheville's cultural landscape, and have their work integrated into an established public art walking tour. The work will be permanently displayed and viewed by thousands of visitors and residents annually.
Artists interested in future opportunities should monitor the City of Asheville's official announcements for calls for proposals. Previous calls have included submission of detailed proposals reviewed by community panels. Selected artists receive the opportunity to have their work professionally installed and promoted through the Urban Trail program.
