Essentials of Iconography: Icon of St. Francis of Assisi

A week-long iconography workshop at St. Edmund's Retreat Center on Enders Island in Mystic, Connecticut, with five consecutive days of studio time. Marking the 2026 jubilee year and the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the workshop focuses on a contemporary prototype of St. Francis composed from art historical images. Participants work in the materials and technique of historical iconography, using egg tempera and natural earth pigments on a 9 by 12 inch wood panel prepared with linen and true artist's gesso. Instruction covers calligraphic line work, color mixing, and blending tones, alongside daily readings from the saint's writings and early biographies. Students should arrive with basic brush skills, familiarity with the color wheel, and experience mixing colors. All materials and tools are included.
