Curios
About the Exhibition
Gemini Arts in the Rosewood neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina presents 'Curios,' a one-woman show by multidisciplinary artist Janet Orselli that turns the gallery into a modern-day cabinet of curiosities. On view through July 17, the exhibit blends standalone objects and mini-installations, including freestanding and wall-mounted aggregate sculptures that are both whimsical and edgy. Orselli, who lives in Columbus, North Carolina and served as an artist-in-residence at 701 CCA in 2019, assembles found objects into works that carry a quiet warning. 'Serpent' fashions an anthropomorphized snake from a racket frame, felt piano dampers and a walking cane, while an impractical ladder built from canes and spindles suspends ghostly shoe forms, suggesting that some ambitions are the stuff of daydream. Before earning her MFA at Clemson, Orselli completed an undergraduate double major that included psychology, which informs the inherent tension in her constructions. The show is on view every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and by appointment, with an artist's talk scheduled for the evening of June 19.
