About the Exhibition

Greater New York returns to MoMA PS1 through August 17, 2026, the sixth edition of the quinquennial survey of artists living and working in the New York area and a centerpiece of the museum's fiftieth anniversary. First launched in 2000, the show gathers local, emerging, and innovative work, and this iteration takes up the forces that shape daily life in the city, including surveillance, economic precarity, and shifting technologies, along with the strategies of resistance and adaptation that meet them. Admission to MoMA PS1 is free. The survey moves between the deeply local and the global. The Ecuadorian-born Cevallos Brothers, who for fifty years have hand-painted carteleras for Queens businesses, open the exhibition with a mural that records Latin American social life along Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights. Dean Majd, raised in Queens, pairs photographs of Palestinian life in the West Bank with images of the Palestinian diaspora in New York. Facing them, Esteban Jefferson's paintings reckon with colonial monuments such as Daniel Chester French's Four Continents, rendering some figures in oil and others in graphite to shift emphasis between the monuments and the people overlooked beneath them. Sound and installation artist Mekko Harjo considers urban Indigenous experience and nightlife as a space for collectivity. MoMA PS1 grew out of Alanna Heiss's alternative-space movement of the 1970s, opening in a former public school in Long Island City in 1976 and merging with the Museum of Modern Art in 1999. Greater New York 2026 is on view at 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, Queens.
