Huang Hankang: The Sky Remains as the Bird Departs

Huang Hankang
May 15, 2026 - July 4, 2026

About the Exhibition

Huang Hankang's solo exhibition presents installations and paintings that treat Shanghai as a processing system for images and histories. Rather than representing China directly, the work examines how that idea is continually generated through cross-cultural dislocation, splicing and re-assembly. Key installations include Gate of Flesh and Soul, which juxtaposes Giuseppe Castiglione's hybrid visual language with the Cathay Theatre and historical fragments; Overlaid Life and Wandering Shadow, departing from Song and Liao Dynasty sources; and the title work, featuring suspended birdcages and architectural forms. Further pieces address perception and embodiment through conch-like facial replacements, cupping scars and porous drift forms, presenting cultural identity as an ongoing process rather than a fixed conclusion.
