John E. Thompson and Colorado Modernism
About the Exhibition
John E. Thompson and Colorado Modernism brings together 28 works at the Denver Art Museum that celebrate the life, legacy, and community of John Edward Thompson, the painter credited with carrying the aesthetics of European modernism into the Rocky Mountain region. Drawn in part from local collectors and The Kirkland, the exhibition honors the artists and patrons who reshaped artistic production in Colorado. It opens July 19, 2026, on level seven of the Martin Building and is included with general admission. Thompson is described by the museum as one of the most important and least known Colorado artists, a figure who pushed regional artists and collectors toward a wider range of styles and techniques and who supported a diverse range of students, including women and immigrants. The show frames modernism not as a coastal phenomenon but as a practice that could be shaped and shared anywhere, set against the broader Colorado scene that includes figures such as B.J.O. Nordfeldt. The exhibition is organized by the Denver Art Museum's Petrie Institute of Western American Art, whose director JR Henneman situates Thompson within a community that believed art is for everyone. It remains on view through summer 2028.
