Monuments of Stillness
About the Exhibition
Monuments of Stillness brings eight hyperrealist swimmer sculptures by the New York artist Carole Feuerman to North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, where they line the Magnificent Mile from the Wrigley Building north to Oak Street through November 15. Presented by Hilton Contemporary Gallery of Chicago, the figures are rendered in painted bronze, resin, and stainless steel and range from life-sized to twelve feet tall, each suspended in a moment of reflection, resilience, and stillness. Two further works will join the installation, bringing the series to ten. Feuerman is among the leading figures of the superrealist and hyperrealist movements, best known for her swimmers and dancers. Her public sculpture has been shown in Rome, New York, Hong Kong, London, and elsewhere; she exhibited at the Venice Biennale, won first prize at the 2008 Beijing Biennale, and presented work during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. After Chicago, the sculptures are bound for Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The outdoor exhibition continues a Chicago tradition of large-scale public art along the Magnificent Mile, a thoroughfare known for its architecture and cultural programming. Alongside the street installation, Hilton Contemporary is presenting a show and sale of Feuerman's smaller-scale works at its locations at 716 N. Wells St. and 3622 S. Morgan St.
