Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON
About the Exhibition
Rose B. Simpson: LEXICON is an installation by the Santa Clara Pueblo artist Rose B. Simpson at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. The exhibition brings together customized classic cars and Simpson's sculptural practice to explore Pueblo art and identity, building connections between ancestral traditions and contemporary American car culture. The presentation pairs Maria, a 1985 Chevrolet El Camino, with a commissioned 1964 Buick Riviera, the latter worked with pottery motifs that honor both Pueblo ceramic traditions and Lowrider culture. The show recently became a gathering point for the Bay Area lowrider community, with car clubs and enthusiasts meeting at the museum to celebrate the culture's contributions and to push back against longstanding stereotypes. The exhibition is on view at the de Young through February 2027.
