Swoon: Into the Forest
About the Exhibition
Swoon: Into the Forest at Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe gathers new work by Caledonia Curry, the street artist known as Swoon, including drawings, paintings, a stop-motion animated film and an 88-card oracle deck. Part autobiography and part fairy tale, the show draws on Curry's challenging childhood in a swampy part of Florida, mixing Southern gothic and magical-realist elements with fluorescent, whimsical color new to her palette. Curry rose to prominence in the early 2000s wheat-pasting monumental figurative paper cutouts across New York City, and has long worked to reach ordinary people through accessible, ephemeral art. At the center of Into the Forest are the Sibylant Sisters and an oracle deck Curry intends for everyday use as a tool for self-reflection rather than fortune-telling. A second gallery room pairs the new work with rare early pieces dating back to 2008, several collaged onto old wooden doors and windows. On view May 15 through July 10, the free exhibition runs daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 725 Canyon Road.
