The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection opens August 29, 2026, at the Harvard Art Museums and runs through May 9, 2027. The exhibition explores how photography shaped cultural memories of postwar America, drawing on an archive of 20,000 photographs from the late 1930s through the early 1960s. Though postwar America is often remembered as peaceful and stable, the show asks why that is the collective memory. Photographers were commissioned to capture weddings, corporate gatherings, and other social events in ways that manipulated and redefined daily life. The exhibition reflects on what was documented, what was left out, and how events were memorialized to shape our understanding of mid-century American culture.
