About the Exhibition

"Warren King: Homecoming" brings the artist's intricate corrugated cardboard sculptures to the Lynden Sculpture Garden in Milwaukee, on view from June 20 through November 15, 2026. The exhibition traces the migration of King's family from Shaoxing, China, to the suburbs of Wisconsin, working cardboard into near life-size figures and wall pieces that echo traditional Chinese lacquerware and woodcarving while drawing on the artist's Western upbringing. Born in Madison in 1970 and raised in Muskego and Brookfield, Warren King trained as an engineer at MIT and Stanford before turning to figurative sculpture, relief and installation that strengthen his connection to Chinese diaspora histories and myths. He is a recent recipient of the Alex J. Ettl Grant from the National Sculpture Society and a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship for Craft/Sculpture, and now lives and works in New York City. The show originated at the James Watrous Gallery in Madison, where it was co-curated by Jody Clowes and the artist, and arrives at Lynden in collaboration with the Organization of Chinese Americans-Wisconsin as part of the garden's summer HOME programming. It opens alongside Lynden's annual HOME World Refugee Day celebration, with an artist reception on June 24. Admission is free.
