The City of Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Housing Authority, and ONE Westside partners are issuing a call to artists for a significant public art opportunity in Chattanooga's Westside neighborhood. This project seeks a professional visual artist or artist team to design and install a large-scale mural on the James A. Henry Hub, a newly renovated community facility located at 1200 Grove Street.
The mural will be approximately 26 feet wide by 34 feet tall and will replace previous murals removed during the building's redevelopment. This artwork will serve as an iconic and motivational focal point in the heart of the Westside community. Artists are expected to collaborate with other local artists and incorporate meaningful community input into the design process, ensuring the mural is culturally relevant and site-specific.
The project is funded through a HUD Choice Neighborhood grant with a total budget of $40,000. The artwork goals include encouraging the James A. Henry building's identity as a community hub for arts, culture, and educational opportunities, thematically representing the values and aspirations of the Westside community, and creating a vibrant, motivational artistic moment in the neighborhood.
This is an excellent opportunity for artists to contribute to community-centered public art while receiving competitive compensation. The selected artist will work closely with community members throughout the design and installation process.
