Photosynthesis Christchurch: Call for Exhibitors

Photosynthesis, the only gallery in Christchurch dedicated solely to photography, is calling for proposals for the inaugural exhibition season at its newly expanded premises. The volunteer-run charity recently moved to a larger space in Sydenham and will stage its Techoman Season starting at the end of June 2026.

The organisation is inviting proposals from solo artists and groups, offering free gallery space and support from volunteers to share fine art made using light with the wider community. Established in 2022, Photosynthesis operates New Zealand's only rentable, community-led darkroom and studio space. In January it scaled up from three small units on St Asaph Street to a 240-square-metre space in Sydenham, effectively doubling its studio and darkroom capacity.

The call is an opportunity for photographers and lens-based artists to exhibit in a dedicated, community-focused venue at no cost for the space itself. Because Photosynthesis is run by volunteers and structured as a charity, the program is built around community access and support rather than commercial representation, making it well suited to emerging and independent photographers seeking their first or next exhibition.

Artists interested in exhibiting should contact the Photosynthesis team with a proposal for a solo or group show. The director, Kieran Haymes, leads the gallery's program from the new Sydenham home. Proposals should outline the body of work, its themes, and any darkroom or studio support that may be needed, so the volunteer team can plan the inaugural season.
