Mirar el agua
About the Exhibition
Mirar el agua (Looking at the Water), a solo exhibition by Cristina Souto, opens June 19, 2026, at the Sala Jovellanos of Centro Cultural Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, and remains on view through July 19, 2026. The opening takes place at 7 p.m. with the artist present. The work does not simply represent a landscape but looks through it: water appears as a surface that reflects, distorts, and preserves traces, opening a way to think about how memories, narratives, and identity are constructed. Souto treats the image as a meeting point between the lived, the imagined, and the archived. Cristina Souto holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Pontevedra faculty and a master's in Contemporary Technological and Performative Art from the University of the Basque Country (EHU). She works at the intersection of ethnography, cinema, and the visual arts, combining digital and analog media in revisions that begin in the archive and reach toward a relational dimension of past and present narrative. Her work moves between film festival circuits and contemporary art contexts, and has been shown at Galician festivals including S8 and Interseccion in A Coruna and Curtocircuito in Santiago. The exhibition is the last of the projects selected in the MH + EHU 2025 program, part of an agreement between the Vitoria-Gasteiz city government and the EHU Fine Arts faculty to promote new artistic creation. The 2025 program also presented work by Lorena Aduna, Nerea Gundin, and Alexia Sayago.
