Asheville Airport: Two Permanent Art Commissions

Asheville Regional Airport invites artists to submit ideas for two permanent installations in its new terminal. Two artists, or artist-led teams, will be commissioned to create site-specific, large-scale works for the Grand Lobby and Main Entrance area and for the Airside Concessions Area. Artists from Western North Carolina will be preferred, and the application deadline is June 22, 2026.
The Grand Lobby and Main Entrance is the arrival point for travelers and offers a distinctive canvas; suspended pieces weighing up to one ton or floor-supported works are possible there. The Airside Concessions Area, the post-security space where travelers linger, offers similar large-scale opportunities. The airport asks that the art embrace the natural beauty and culture of Western North Carolina and help create an authentic, welcoming sense of place. Works must suit large commercial spaces, meet the highest creative and compositional quality, and comply with public safety, structural, maintenance and ADA standards. There is no required style; abstract, representational and other approaches are welcome.
The commissions are part of AVL Forward, the airport's terminal modernization project launched in 2019. Submissions are open at flyavl.com.
