28th Annual Peggy Doole National Small Works Exhibition

A national juried exhibition of contemporary printmaking at Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington, DC, open to US artists 18 and over. Juror Mark Jenkins selects the show; entries close July 3 and prizes total $1,750.

The Washington Print Foundation presents the 28th annual Peggy Doole National Small Works Exhibition, a national juried show of contemporary printmaking held at the long-established Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington, DC. The exhibition runs July 31 through August 30, 2026, with an opening reception and awards on Saturday, August 1 from 2 to 5 PM.

What's eligible

The show welcomes hand-pulled prints, screen prints, digital prints, fine art photographs, and three-dimensional work with print components. Work must be original, editioned, and archivally printed and framed (editions of one, such as monoprints, are accepted). A maximum of three original works created within the past two years may be entered, and only one piece per applicant is selected for exhibit.

Size limits: two-dimensional work no larger than 120 square inches (image) and 250 square inches (framed); three-dimensional work no more than 600 cubic inches. Two-dimensional work must be framed under Plexiglass and wired for hanging.

Juror

Mark Jenkins is a veteran arts writer who reviewed visual art for the Washington Post for nearly 20 years and has contributed to NPR's "All Things Considered," Washington City Paper, Time Out New York, Rolling Stone, Adweek, and Slate. He currently reviews local gallery and museum shows in his newsletter, discerningeye.substack.com.

Eligibility

Open to artists 18 and older residing in the United States. Current members of the Washington Printmakers Gallery are not eligible.

Schedule

  • July 10: Accepted entrants notified by email
  • July 13-26: Shipped and hand-delivered work arrives in Washington
  • July 28: Installation
  • July 31: Exhibition opens
  • August 1, 2-5 PM: Opening reception and awards
  • August 30: Last day of the exhibition

This exhibit honors Peggy Doole (1934-2021), a longtime resident of the metro D.C. area whose post-graduate museum work led her to a special passion for printmaking, including years with the school program at the National Gallery of Art.
