Sacred Art Open Call: Montreal Cathedral Commission
The Archdiocese of Montreal seeks figurative painters for a commemorative work at Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. Deadline June 21.
The Archdiocese of Montreal has issued an open call for sacred art for its mother church, Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. Professional artists with expertise in figurative painting are invited to submit a proposal for a new commemorative work titled 'Maisonneuve Sets a Cross Upon Mount Royal.' The call was issued on June 2, and proposals are due June 21.
Applicants will depict the moment on January 6, 1643, when French military officer Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, founder of the settlement Ville-Marie on the Island of Montreal, erected a cross on Mount Royal in gratitude after the settlement was spared from a threatened flood in December 1642. The work will help complete the historical narrative of Montreal's founding already conveyed through the cathedral's artworks, which depict the city's origins but currently omit Maisonneuve, the principal founder and first governor of Ville-Marie.
The winning entry will be announced in September, and the finished work will be unveiled on January 6, 2027, the 384th anniversary of Maisonneuve's tribute. The painting will be installed in the northwest alcove of the cathedral, opposite Georges Delfosse's paintings depicting Jeanne Mance and the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph.
Archbishop Christian Lepine chairs the selection jury and hopes the painting will serve as a reminder of a defining act of faith in Montreal's history. Caroline Tanguay, director of the archdiocese's parish services department, notes that sacred art remains a powerful instrument of cultural transmission that invites contemplation and dialogue.
