Gwangju Biennale Artistic Director Open Call 2028

For the first time, the Gwangju Biennale is selecting the artistic director of its 2028 edition through an open call to curators worldwide. Deadline August 3.

Deadline: August 3, 2026

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has issued a call for applications for the role of artistic director of its 17th edition, scheduled for 2028. This marks the first time since the biennale's founding in 1995 that the position will be filled through an open process rather than direct appointment.

Previously, the biennale's artistic director was selected by the foundation's board from a shortlist of recommended or nominated candidates. The new system invites proposals from both individual curators and curatorial teams based in Korea or abroad, who must submit a curatorial portfolio and concept. The foundation has framed the change as an effort to establish a more transparent and inclusive selection process, stating that it aims to build a more democratic and open selection system while preserving the spirit of Gwangju and the pride of its 30-year history.

The application period runs from June 8 to August 3, with the appointment expected to be announced in October. The open call comes as preparations continue for the 16th edition, titled 'You must change your life,' directed by Singaporean artist-filmmaker Ho Tzu Nyen and scheduled to open on September 5.

Founded in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale is among Asia's most influential contemporary art events. This open call represents a notable opportunity for curators internationally to shape one of the region's flagship exhibitions.
