Lake George Art & Canoe Trail: Call for Muralists
The Lake George Arts Project seeks artists within 100 miles of Lake George, New York to paint four outdoor murals for the new Art & Canoe Trail. Apply by Jul...
The Lake George Arts Project, in collaboration with the Town and Village of Lake George, has issued an open call for muralists to create four outdoor murals as part of a new public art initiative, the Lake George Art & Canoe Trail. The murals will be displayed throughout the village, weaving art directly into the fabric of the community and turning public spaces into lasting landmarks.
All artists living within a 100-mile radius of Lake George are welcome to apply. Experience with large-scale public art or site-specific design is encouraged but not required. Applicants are urged to explore the history and landscape of Lake George when developing themes for their proposals, and may submit multiple designs and apply for more than one of the selected mural locations.
The four mural sites are: 109 Canada Street (side of the LG Mini-Mart / Gyro Hut), 127 Canada Street (side of the Fun World Arcade on McGillis), Lower Amherst Street (the wall below the Boardwalk Restaurant, which requires a design refresh that preserves the current aesthetic), and Beach Road (the Lake George Village Pump Station near the public docks).
Compensation for selected artists will be based on the assigned location and will include a stipend for supplies and materials, paid one month before work begins. Each mural will feature signage with a QR code linking to the Lake George Arts Project website, where the artist's name, the title of the work, its inspiration, and historical references will be displayed.
Applications will be accepted from June 10 through July 10, 2026. A selection panel will meet during the week of July 15, and artists will be notified at the end of July. Wall preparation, priming and painting are scheduled for August 1 to 27, 2026, with final signage installation August 27 to 29 and an official public launch on August 30.
The initiative is part of a larger, multi-phase public art project spanning 2026 and 2027, funded through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward Program. A second phase featuring 18 designed and painted canoes and paddles is planned for spring 2027. In alignment with New York State DRI funding goals, proposals from artists certified as New York State Minority and Women Business Enterprises (MWBE), or those using NYS-certified MWBE suppliers, will receive priority.
